Poetry and music podcast. It's the midsummer, anti-war poetry podcast. I donâ??t mean overtly anti-war, but I do write poems with a theme of political power, neighbour versus neighbour, calls to arms, and division. So why did the RAF choose the day Iâ??m recording Friction Fiction to try out their fighters overhead? Coincidence? Paranoid? Anyway, it makes for a poignant moment.

Music from CDK, Squid Ink (Plastic Dave), a great collaboration between Squid Ink and The Hexyl Circle, Tom MacNiven, and Countryside.

Additional music by Alphasound, Penston, DJ Rkod, Michael Wenz, and Bombero.

Frictionfiction 23

Here's the script of the show as promised:

Hello, this is the Frictionfiction show number 23.

Thanks for listening. All an artist needs, is an audience.

Telephone Teeth by J. Marinelli with his angry young one man band. How does he do that?

And My Fair Lady by Cactus Jons

This is the Frictionfiction Show. Each week you can hear the best indie, acoustic, and alternative music on the internet today, plus news of the top online fiction magazines. Speaking of which, Telephone Teeth and My Fair Lady go out for Tom Dooley at www.eclectica.org, new October/November issue of Eclectica is out now.

This is Who I Am, by Margo Gordon

The sun was overhead. There wasn't a shadow in the square. I saw graffiti. She stopped by a shop window, and I kept walking.

"Let's keep moving."

But she kept looking. I looked in the shop window too. I saw oil paintings, the harbour, the beach, ruins.

"Aren't they cute?"

"Great. Now let's go to the beach. I don't like it here."

"But."

"No buts. Look at the graffiti."

We tracked out of the square, and onto a bright mosaic path. White-shoed couples sat in the shade, and leaned towards each other, talking. We stopped for water. She unhooked her bag, and let out a gargle.

"It's gone."

"What's gone?"

But I knew what had gone.

In the back pocket of the bag. Her money. Her credit cards. I kicked a date so it flew past the couples who turned away. She slung the bag on her shoulder.

"Stay here."

"What?"

"I said, stay here."

Alone, on the beach, I claimed a sun bed and lay down, staring at the underside of the umbrella.

I woke up. She was leaning over me. She smiled.

"Cards cancelled. Five Euros missing."

"Big deal. Sorry I shouted."

She laughed.

"Sorry I took no notice. At least you never said, 'I told you so.'"

"Would I?"

I rolled over, and looked along the beach at the other bathers. I saw two men walking towards the sun beds. They stripped off, and sat down. They paid the man for sun beds. One asked the other for a light. They lay back, and turned their baseball caps round, blowing out smoke. They said something, and laughed. Two women on the next beds looked at each other, and rolled onto their fronts. The men stuck out their jaws, and angled themselves to the sun.

The

Ones.

They thought their victims would spend the day in a hot police station filling out forms. They were wrong. I watched, and I waited. The sun dropped low, and cooled. Other bathers rolled up their towels, and left. The man stacked the beds. It was just down to me. I stared. They stared back, and then they looked at each other. They laughed. I sat up, and dug my feet in the warm sand.

She grabbed my arm, and I looked at her.

"What?"

She smiled.

"It's not your problem."

Sinking by Oceanponee.

That goes out for Wes White. All of the people in Wes's top 12 are contributors to Attack!!!! magazine, which he edits. The latest issue, Response: Leighton, is out now and can be ordered from ecartilage.co.uk,

My story, 'It's Not Your Problem' is at Surprising Stories

During the Frictionfiction summer break, I've been writing and recording songs (as well as writing fiction) for a CD I called Shedworks, under the band name The Hexyl Circle. The Hexyl Circle draws influences from Senegal, English folk, Britpop, Classical Modernism, and Manchester Post-Punk. Who Knows? is track 2 on the CD, and gets good reviews on Broadjam, Bebo and Myspace. I use a Sony laptop, Shure mike, Fender and Taylor guitars through Line 6 Toneport, assorted instruments, Xylo, gopichand, spinning drum, Indian flute and so on. All 13 tracks can be heard in order on http://thehexylcircle.bebo.com. At Myspace, you can hear a selection, www.myspace.com/thehexylcircle.
